Familiar Places, New Adventures

Summer Adventure Camp is growing in an exciting new direction this year — with an even bigger focus on outdoor adventure, hands-on learning, and active summer fun.

Families can still expect the same caring staff, familiar school locations, and welcoming atmosphere they know and love. But this summer, campers will spend even more time outside exploring, creating, learning, and connecting with one another.

Serving students in grades 1–7 who have completed kindergarten, Summer Adventure Camp takes place in local public schools across three convenient locations in Anchorage and Eagle River. Campers have a familiar home-base for the day, offering a simple and accessible option for families across the community.

Adventure Close to Home

One of the things families love most about Summer Adventure Camp is that camp happens right in local schools and communities.

With three locations, many families are able to choose a camp site closer to home, helping campers feel connected to their community while building friendships with other kids nearby. The school setting also creates a comfortable and familiar environment for many campers, especially younger students or those attending camp for the first time.

Because each camp location is designed around a smaller campus-style setup, campers and staff have more opportunities to connect throughout the day, helping friendships grow naturally over the course of the summer.

Highlights from last summer.

More Time Outside

This summer, Summer Adventure Camp will spend about 80% of the day outdoors, weather permitting.

From games and creative activities to guest speakers and STEM experiences, camp activities are being adapted for outdoor spaces whenever possible. Even mealtimes will move outside, with canopies available when needed.

Activities are also designed with age groups in mind, giving younger campers opportunities to explore and play while older campers can take on more detailed and challenging versions of the same activities.

The goal is simple: more movement, more fresh air, more hands-on experiences, and more opportunities for campers to stay engaged all summer long.

Weekly Trips Beyond Camp

Campers will continue enjoying weekly trips to Camp Fireweed — a favorite addition introduced last summer that quickly became a highlight of the program.

These visits give campers the chance to experience classic camp activities like boating on University Lake, practicing archery, climbing the rock wall, or swimming at the Alaska Pacific University pool. Campers get to explore new environments and try new activities while staying with familiar staff and friends.

For even more adventure, we also offer extra field trips throughout the summer that tie into each session’s theme. These special outings head out into the community and are available at an additional cost.

Planned field trip locations for this summer include:

Please note:

  • Planned field trip locations are subject to change.
  • Homestead campers visit Camp Fireweed on Wednesdays. Because off-site field trips also take place on Wednesdays, campers who attend a field trip will miss Camp Fireweed that week.

Looking Ahead to Summer

Summer Adventure Camp is evolving into a more active outdoor experience while keeping the familiar, supportive environment families already trust.

Camp sessions run from June through the beginning of August, giving families flexible options throughout the summer. As a licensed program, Summer Adventure Camp is also Child Care Assistance approved, and scholarships are available to help make camp accessible for more families.

With three locations, outdoor adventures, STEM experiences, weekly Camp Fireweed trips, and activities designed for a wide range of ages, campers can build confidence, friendships, and lasting summer memories along the way.
