Rice Krispie Treat Day is an age-old tradition at Camp Fire. In this blog post, we explore the history of the event and how we chose to celebrate it this year!

THE HISTORY

In 1932, the classic Rice Krispie Treat recipe we know and love made its grand debut. Developed by Kellogg’s very own Mildred Day and Malitta Jensen, the recipe was adapted from an old molasses and puffed wheat concoction. Rice Krispie Treat Day came later, a tradition dating back to the 1930’s according to the Des Moines Reigster, beginning as a fundraising collaboration between Camp Fire and Kellogg’s.

After Camp Fire contacted Kellogg’s for fundraising ideas, Mildred Day brought the Rice Krispie Treat recipe — and some industrial-sized cooking gear — to Kansas City. There, she churned out trays of gooey goodness for Camp Fire Girls, who sold them door-to-door. So was born Rice Krispie Treat Day.

Ever since, Rice Krispie Treats have been a household favorite, even now into 2024, and Camp Fire upholds the tradition.

OUR TRADITION

At Camp Fire Alaska, Rice Krispie Treat Day is an opportunity for staff to participate in a friendly (yet decidedly fierce) competition. Contenders bring their entries to the break room, and all staff sample the treats, who judicate the competition by leaving their pick for “best treat” on a folded piece of paper and depositing it in the selection jar. At the end of the competition, the votes are tallied, and the three highest ranking entries are awarded prizes.

2024 WINNING ENTRIES

This year featured many delicious entries, ranging from sweet to savory, but only the top three rankings were crowned victorious.

Third Place — “Avalanche Krispies”, “Mellow Friend”, “Cookies ‘n Cream Treat”, “You’re a Star”

A $25 Value Gift

In a historic twist for Camp Fire Alaska, Third Place was a four-way tie with three votes apiece!

Second Place — “Crispy”

A $50 Value Gift

Securing second place with six votes was Cripsy!

First Place — “Snack Lovers”

A $100 value gift and a Paid Day Off

Taking home the first-place prize, with a landslide of 18 votes, was “Snack Lovers.”

CONTINUING TRADITION

We are thankful our staff participated during this event, contributing to and upholding this fun, delicious, and historical Camp Fire tradition. We are already looking forward to tasting next year’s entries!
