Spring Break Learning Experience: A Visit With Snakes

This week, children attending Camp Fire Alaska’s Spring Break Camp got the opportunity to see snakes up close — and even hold them!
The event encouraged children to engage with animals that are not always seen as likeable, broadening their horizons, and deepening their appreciation for animals. They were mesmerized by the snakes, appreciating their smooth — not slimy — scales and color patterns.
The man with the snakes: Carl Sterrett of Stickman Snakes. With his collection of thirty-three snakes, Carl helps to educate children about the animals, their different species, characteristics, and behavioral patterns. Carl hopes that with each snake experience he leads, a lifelong impression will be made on kids, giving them a better understanding snakes, and putting to rest negative biases towards the often misunderstood animals.
The event was a massive success for the kids, as it did spark a newfound admiration for snakes in the children, igniting their curiosity and appreciation for nature – and even squashing some deep-rooted phobias!
If you’re interested in seeing more of Stickman Snakes, Carl and his scaly companions – including the largest boa constrictor in the state! – will be at the Alaska Reptile & Exotics Expo from 11 AM to 9 PM on Saturday, March 23. The paid event is open to families, and free for children 6 and under. Tickets can be purchased at: https://www.tickettailor.com/events/alaskareptileexpo/1108738
