Last Friday was Go Blue Day, a celebration taking place on the first Friday of every April. Annually, thousands of Alaskans celebrate Go Blue Day by wearing blue. The event aims to raise awareness for Child Abuse Prevention Month, an effort to improve the childhood experience at a national level.

To spread awareness and promote healthy family dynamics, Camp Fire Alaska helped host the Go Blue Day Family Activity Fair. The event was a massive success, with families pouring into the Fairview Recreational Center in droves! Attendees were greeted with music, free pizza, snacks, and drinks, and had the opportunity to participate in fun activities, like arts and crafts, door prize giveaways, and a LEGO building station. Those lucky enough to attend were able to interact with our very own Camp Fire Marshmallow. The iconic mascot, brought to life by Nichole Boyden, Camp Fire Alaska’s Director of Operations, led some family activities and spread positive messages of encouragement.

Statistically, Alaska has some of the highest reported rates of child abuse in the nation — 38% of all children born in Alaska are reported to Child Welfare, as stated by the State of Alaska. It’s been proven that children who experience abuse and neglect are more likely to develop cognitive delays. The trauma they endure can influence unhealthy brain development, causing life-long developmental outcomes, as referenced in this article by the National Library of Medicine.

Camp Fire hopes that, by spreading awareness of Child Abuse Prevention Month at the Go Blue Day Family Activity Fair, we are one step closer to creating a brighter future — because the children of today are the adults of tomorrow.
