Before signing your kid up for summer camp, your mind may race with questions. Good news! With registration just around the corner, we’re here to answer some of those questions and ease your mind so the choice between Camp Fire’s three incredible summer camps is even easier.

Where are these three camps located?

Our Summer Adventure camp runs at elementary schools in Anchorage and Eagle River.

Camp Si-La-Meo is held in Anchorage on the campus of Alaska Pacific University.

Camp K is along the shores of Kenai Lake in Cooper Landing, a two-hour bus ride from Anchorage. The transportation to camp is included!

Do you offer an overnight camp?

We do! Camp K is actually Alaska’s longest running, co-ed overnight camp. There are a variety of sessions, ranging from 4, 6 and 12 days each session. The traditional camps are for either ages 9-17 or 9-17, while the expedition camps are for ages 15-17.

I’m looking for day camp. What are my options?

We have two great day camp options here in Anchorage. Camp Si-La-Meo is an outdoor adventure day camp structured like your classic summer camp experience. It runs from 7:30am-5:30pm Monday through Friday for ages 5-15. Summer Adventure camp is our licensed day camp with weekly themes. It runs from 7am-5:30pm and is for those entering 1st through 7th grade.

What will my child be doing at camp?

What’s so great about the variety of camps we offer is the huge range in activities and settings!

At Summer Adventure camp, each week has a new exciting theme. Every day your child will partake in hands-on activities such as arts and crafts, cooking, science, and outdoor games. They also will partake in local fieldtrips.

Kayaking, target sports, and hiking are just a few of the activities done daily at Camp Si-La-Meo. This camp also has weekly themes to get you pumped up! Almost all the campers’ time is spent outdoors, which makes for the perfect opportunity to also partake in some important outdoor education. Oh yeah… And did we mention there are lots of games?

Camp K is located on the shores of Kenai Lake, where campers can enjoy boating, swimming and more. There are loads of hiking trails and a game field for activities and outdoor adventure! Let’s not forget about the art building! Camp K also offers an Expedition Camp, where campers venture off to the beautiful Halibut Cove for a more intense wilderness experience.

No matter which camp you send your child to, they will be plenty busy and experiencing *camp magic*. Camp sessions are predetermined and included in a provided handbook for your reference.

Will my child be safe?

At Camp Fire, safety is our first priority. Camp Si-La-Meo and Camp K operate to the highest standards possible as they are accredited by the American Camp Assocation. Summer Adventure Camps are all licensed programs. Solid best practices are implemented across all locations as they meet these high standards for safe quality youth settings.

Additionally, we take pride in our staff being trained to handle the unpredictability that comes with working with youth and being outdoors in Alaska. Our staff go through a variety of trainings before camp begins that ensures they are prepared to lead and instruct emergency procedures for a variety of emergencies and situations. All staff are required to have a current Adult/Pediatric CPR, AED & First Aid Certification from a nationally recognized provider. Specialists with certificates are hired for activities such as swimming, boating, rock climbing, and back country trip leading to ensure proper techniques are being used by youth.

How do you communicate with parents?

Camp Fire Alaska communicates camp updates through email, social media, and our website, www.campfireak.org. The camp phone is for communication with the main Camp Fire office and with parents. Leadership Staff will call you if there is any need for concern.

Please note that Camp K is in a more remote area with an off-grid facility.  There is email, cell phone and an emergency communication devise for critical communications, however, families should not expect social media posts throughout the camp week due to this very limited connectivity.

Do people recommend Camp Fire’s summer camps?

YES! In 2020, we won SILVER for Best of Alaska’s Summer Camp Award and in 2021 we won GOLD!
